Tourism has huge potential in Northland. We have considerable natural amenities to attract visitors both domestically and from overseas. There is a need to identify the drivers and develop a plan to grow this industry to the next level.

To inform how Northland’s tourism could grow under an accelerated growth scenario the historical growth path of Kaikoura (a region whose growth has hinged on the growth of the tourism industry – driven largely by whale watching) has been analysed.  Northland’s tourism accelerated growth scenario assumes that the tourist related industries (accommodation, transport, retail and cultural and recreational services) in Northland grow at the same rate as in Kaikoura over the past ten years.
